Shreenathji temple is the most sacred pilgrimage for Vaishnavs and for the highest number of followers from Pushtimarg-the way of grace laid down by Vallabhacharya. Thirty-five kilometres northeast of Udaipur lies the quaint town of Nathdwara, wherein is housed this 17th-century temple of Lord Krishna: here he is worshipped as Shreenathji, meaning a seven-year-old boy lifting the Govardhan hill.
Historical Background
This temple deity has quite a story for it. At one time, it was installed in a temple at Govardhan, near Mathura, in Uttar Pradesh. Hind Arabian Aurangzeb’s undue treatment towards Hindu temples in the latter half of the 17th century brought about this idol being moved to a place for its safety. It is said that when the chariot in which the idol was being carried entered into Nathdwara, it got stuck in the mud, which is now taken to mean a divine signal of the Lord’s wish to remain there. Henceforth, the temple was built in 1672 by the then ruler of Mewar Rana Raj Singh, who up to this day is esteemed to be the greatest earthly devotee of Shreenathji.
The Idol of Shreenathji
This is considered a black marble statue self-manifested from Govardhan Hill. The idol represents the physical manifestation of Krishna, who here has his left hand raised to hold Govardhan Hill, his right hand resting at his waist. The tender smile speaks the language of a cheeky baby Krishna. Hence the idol is attired in rich clothes and bedecked with jewelry, with these clothes and ornaments being changed at least a couple of times in a day through the ritual termed “Shringar.”
Unique Worship and Rituals
The temple adheres to the traditions of the Pushtimarg. It puts precious Bhakti or the total surrender of love towards God and not heavy ritualistic traditions. Each day in the Shreenathji Temple is divided into eight darshans (viewings). Every darshan marks a period in the daily life of Lord Krishna—from waking up in the morning till retiring for the night. These are Mangala, Shringar, Gwal, Rajbhog, Utthapan, Bhog, Sandhya, and Shayan.
All these darshans are marked with soulful music and bhajans, besides the offering of different kinds of sweets and tasty food, which are considered blessings or Prasad taken from the temple. The temple kitchens, popularly known as Annakut Bhavan, are highly regarded for the vast array of offerings that are prepared, especially during festivals.
Festivals and Celebrations
Numerous Cheerful Hindu festivals are celebrated at the temple such as Janmashtami, Annakut, Diwali, and Holi. During this period, the decorations are at their peak, with lakhs of devotees visiting from all over India and even from overseas to receive blessings. The grandeur of Annakut Utsav washes out any cobwebs from one’s eyes; food has never been offered to the Deity in hundreds of variations.
Nathdwara Town: A Cultural Extension
The town of Nathdwara was nurtured around the temple and depends upon religious tourism. The narrow streets are lined with shops that sell every kind of religious item, Pichwai paintings (a traditional art form depicting Lord Krishna’s life), sweets, and traditional clothes. Day in and day out, the whole town enjoys a spiritual and celebratory ambience.
Conclusion
Shreenathji Temple is famously known as more than just a worship place in Nathdwara; it is the very culture of faith, tradition, and heritage. For the million devotees who consider it, it is the very abode of Lord Krishna in whose Divine presence life becomes witnessed. A journey to this holy shrine is a dive into centuries of incessant devotion, art, and spiritual rapture.
