Badi Talab

Badi Talab, or Jiyan Sagar, is one of the least known but arguably most beautiful lakes of the “City of Lakes”, Udaipur, Rajasthan. The lake is around 12 kilometers from the main city, and is surrounded by the Aravalli hills which help separate it from the rest of Udaipur, thus making it a wonderful dance with nature where you do not have to dread the torrent of tourists. This is a prime location for those travelers who enjoy nature, photography and seclusion.

Historic Data

Badi Talab was built in the 17th century, by Maharana Raj Singh I (1652-1680), in honor of his mother, Jiyan Devi, after whom the lake was also called “Jiyan Sagar”. The Maharana had decided to build the lake as a water reservoir to replenish the decline in water due to famine, thus helping noble men, and people who questioned the reputational sustainability of the Rajputs to provide public welfare.

Natural beauty and scenery

Badi Talab is about 155 square kilometers with green hills all around, beautiful thick foliage, and each angle has breathtaking views. Badi is not troubled by tourism like lakes of Pichola or Fatehsagar, and Badi Talab is unbelievably serene and quiet.

The stillness of the water was exceptional and it was an ideal spot from which to reflect the blue skies or the surrounding hills. The views are beautiful from here especially during dawn or dusk.

An interesting and beautiful part of the lake is the vessel of Badi Pal, which is a well-constructed embankment with stone chhatris (or cenotaphs) modelled for some thematic, traditional Mewar architecture fashion. The stone domed pavilions were interesting features of architecture that provide some functional seating for guests to relax and appreciate some scenery.

A Peaceful Getaway

Badi Talab was an option for travelers wanting quiet and offbeat experiences since it provided a quieter, cleaner, and far more tranquil sample than most of the major attractions of Udaipur central, apart from being a less irritating choice. The road to Badi Talab was a nice drive through rural, field, and forest scenery.

Boating is not an officially offered activity at Badi Talab, but people do walk along the embankment, or they simply sit by the water enjoying nature. It’s also a good place for meditation, sketching or tranquillity photography. To visit during the monsoon season is the best time because the lake is full and the hills around are a wonderful lush green.

Eco-Tourism and Conservation

Badi Talab has increasingly been marked as a valuable ecological zone in recent years, with authorities and environmental organizations encouraging a conservation approach in keeping it in its very pristine state by limiting construction and primarily promoting responsible tourism. The trend of not only tourists but particularly eco-tourists is drawing attention to the role of conserving our peaceful natural resources such as Badi Talab.

Conclusion

Badi Talab is a hidden gem of Udaipur – with its history, scenic vistas and peace and quiet. For visitors who want to escape from the vibrations of city life or the clamor of tourists at major attractions, Badi Talab is quite refreshing. It calls on you to slow down, think, and engage with local nature within the heart of one of the world’s quietest regions, Rajasthan.
